It’s 2025, and you’re planning your next hairstyle, which will cost you at least $300 to get installed. You’re bored, drained, tired, and most of all, tired of breaking the bank just to feel pretty on the outside. You hesitate before reaching for your wallet to book your next appointment. In that very moment, you take a leap of faith—you exit out of the booking site, leave your wallet on the counter, and say to yourself, “I want to grow my natural hair.”
Well, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s get started.
The Key to Growing Your Natural Hair: Consistency & Repetition
Growing your natural hair is all about consistency and repetition, and it all starts with scalp health. Your scalp is like a garden—it requires weekly maintenance to thrive. If you neglect your garden, you won’t cultivate anything beautiful, and the same applies to your hair.
Establishing a Wash Day Routine
The first step is to set aside a specific day of the week for washing your hair without distractions. Establishing a consistent routine ensures your scalp remains clean and healthy, which is essential for hair growth. Washing your hair weekly removes product buildup, itchiness, and dryness, giving your hair the best environment to flourish.
You’ll need at least one clarifying shampoo to deeply cleanse your scalp and remove excess buildup. However, clarifying shampoos should only be used when your hair feels extremely dirty and needs a reset. After clarifying, follow up with a moisturizing shampoo to restore hydration to your strands.
Next, apply your favorite deep conditioner. Whether you choose a protein-based or hydrating deep conditioner depends on your hair’s porosity. If you’re unsure about your hair’s porosity, check out my latest Healthy Hair 101 blog, where I break it down in detail. Understanding your hair’s porosity helps determine the best products for conditioning, styling, and overall care.
Now that you have a solid understanding of wash day, let’s explore some must-have tools to make the process even easier.
Essential Wash Day Tools
1. Wash Day Basket

A wash day basket allows you to keep all your hair care products and accessories in one place. One of the most frustrating parts of wash day is realizing halfway through that you forgot a key item—like your detangling brush or sectioning clips. Instead of stepping out of the shower dripping wet and making a mess, gather everything you need the day before and place it in a cute, convenient basket for easy access.
2. Anti-Fog Shower Mirror

I personally cannot detangle my hair without a mirror to see exactly what I’m doing—period. This game-changing tool allows you to take your time and properly detangle without guessing how much hair you have left to work through. It also helps you identify trouble spots that need extra care. Trust me, you’ll thank me later. This is the anti-fog shower mirror!
3. Hair Sectioning Clips

Sectioning your hair before detangling makes the entire process smoother and more manageable. In my experience, using sectioning clips can cut your wash day time in half! Depending on how thick your hair is you can do as many sections to make detangling as easy at possible. I personally love to do 4 equal sections.
4. Detangling Brush

Some people prefer to detangle their hair after getting out of the shower, but in my opinion, that’s working backward. It’s best to detangle while your hair is soaking wet and coated with either a moisturizing shampoo (if it has enough slip) or a slippery conditioner.
Finding the right detangling brush for your hair type is essential. Not all brushes work for every hair texture—what works for thick hair may not be ideal for fine hair. My personal favorites are the Tangle Teezer and The Unbrush. I recently got a Felicia Leatherwood Brush, but I haven’t tried it yet (update coming soon!).
5. Microfiber Towel

Microfiber towels are gentle on your hair strands and help prevent breakage. Avoid using rough cotton towels or t-shirts, as they can cause split ends and damage. A high-quality microfiber towel absorbs excess water without stripping moisture from your hair, making it a great investment for your wash day routine.
This is just Part 1 of my guide on how to grow your natural hair in 2025. I hope you’ve learned something valuable and will start implementing these tips to care for your natural hair properly. See you back for Part 2?
